What my journey to recovery has taught me so far

Before and after (3 years apart)

I became very hill in 2006. My health was becoming increasingly worse over the years until all of a sudden, I could not recover from a flu. It is like my health and life collapsed overnight. I was completely exhausted, unable to show up at work and could not eat anything even a piece of vegetable.

My digestive system had collapsed, I had severe diarrhea and my flu symptoms would only get worse when I ate something no matter how healthy it was.

I thought I was going to die!

Whatever I tried out of desperation would not work until bit by bit I started to welcome the real lessons God wanted to teach me.

Take time to breath and be with myself

We have this notion that relaxing should feel good but relaxing doesn’t necessarily always feel good.

Relaxing means taking time to breath, feeling your life as it is right now amidst all of your thoughts and feelings coming into play.

Be kind towards myself

When you struggle with something and your only aim is result oriented, you forget about kindness.

Kindness is not result oriented, kindness is being gentle with yourself amidst all of your struggles.

It is kindness that allows change to take place.

Learn to listen to my body

I could never really listen to my body because I didn’t want to relax into my thoughts and feelings, and I couldn’t be kind towards myself.

The only way to listen to your body is to practice kindness towards yourself and take time to breath, being with yourself. This is the only way that will allow you to get in touch with the underlying voice that is guiding your choices.

Value long term gratification as opposed to short term

We learn to value feeling good in the moment and learn to make choices that make us feel good. But what we choose to feel good is not necessarily good for us.

It is good to take time to get in touch with what it is that we really want so we can be reminded of that as we make choices throughout the day.

By being connected to what is most dear to us, we can learn to find comfort in making choices that support the long term instead of the short term or instant gratification.

Learn to make myself come first in a good way

We have learned to judge the notion of making ourselves come first but if making yourself come first comes from respecting yourself, learning to say yes and say no in a way that is kind towards yourself, then this can only be good for everyone involved.

Even if the other person does not get what they would like from you, you are giving them something more valuable, yourself!

Include fermented foods and drinks into my diet

Every culture used to have their own fermented foods or drink in one form or another.

We all know that we need a healthy microflora in order to be healthy.

Probiotic can be found in real foods in a form that your body can recognize.

Fermented foods are hardy and rich in healthy microflora. They are also cleansing, rich in nutrients and they help with digestion.

Use “The body ecology diet” as my diet guidelines

The body ecology diet is everything spelled out in a book that I already knew but that I was desperately trying to ignore in order to have things my own way.

It is also refreshing because it speaks the same language as my inner whispers :)

The importance of grieving

Grieving comes with feeling things for what they are. As we feel and see things for what they are, we can recognize what harms us and from that same space, gently let it go.

The process of letting ourselves see is what grieving is all about.

Take responsibility for what has contributed to my current state of health

Letting ourselves see how we may have contributed to our current state of health is the only way to gain real clarity as to how to go about healing our disease. It is a painful process that requires being honest.

Ask myself: How can I?

This is the most empowering question I know of.

I have discovered this question while reading “Rich dad, poor dad” and it has changed forever the course of action of my life.

Instead of standing in the victim role, you can move into the drivers seat, asking yourself the most empowering question: How can I?

This question comes from taking responsibility for our current state of health and being willing to take action and make changes.

Learn to do something constructive as oppose to destructive with my time

I have learned to spend time drawing when I feel uneasy about something. Drawing is a new discovery for me.

This is not about being good at what you choose to do. This is about processing your feelings as you put all of your care and attention into doing something that is good for you.

This canĀ  help you grow and heal.

Make changes in baby steps

Make changes that are within your reach, and take it in steps.

If you fall down, get up again.

Always try to stretch yourself.

These are deep rooted patterns that can take time to heal and change into new patterns.

Learning to embrace the process is more important than the results themselves.

What have you learned on your health journey so far?

I would love to read your comments as I know we can all learn so much from one another.

I enjoyed your post today and found myself wishing you would share more of your journey. The ideas of kindness and breathing resonate with some of what I too have learned the past couple of years. A journey, and how do we move forward into the unknown and not stay ‘stuck’? Happy Canada Day and enjoy every step of the journey!

I am going through a lot….trying this and that, eating healthy and yet I don’t see any results. I will persist and one of these days I will feel better. Right now I am very overwhelmed. You inspire me.

    Thank you.

Hi Danielle, thank you for your words. It is definitely a journey to learn all this and find healing, not something that can be done all at once. And there is so much to learn on this diet, it can especially feel overwhelming at the beginning. Have fun with what you are learning. Cultured vegetables and young coconut kefir are wonderful!
